PROGRAM: Dog Sledding and Desert Adventure
Day 1 – Airport or train station pick up. Overnight in guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar. Upgrades available.
Day 2 – Drive to Terelj National park. Meet your dogsled team and mushers to start your dog sledding expedition. The morning will allow you to get used to the sledge, on an easy path, till you are used to your team. Many nomads live in this valley, but still the area remains very wild and beautiful. Fauna is diversified and the silence intensified by low temperatures creates an unreal atmosphere. Sled till the evening, when we will stay overnight in a ger next to a local herder and his family. Experience the life of Mongolian Nomads and learn to make traditional meal such as Buuz (steamed dumplings).
Day 3 – After breakfast dog sled towards Tsonjin Boldog between Gorki-Terelj Park and Khan-Khentii National Park. The river calms down and divides itself in many small streams. After lunch you will say goodbye to your dog sled team. Now it’s time to mount up and ride horses over this mountainous and forested terrain to arrive at our camp in the late afternoon. You can visit the impressive Chinggis Khaan Statue complex, a 40m tall equestrian statue dominating the landscape and stay overnight in a comfortable ger camp, with cozy ger, electricity and western facilities.
Day 4 – Drive West towards Khustai National Park. At Khustai, head on into the protected zone and start the safari to the mountain where the Przewalski’s Horse can be found. You can also visit the information centre before entering the park to learn about the history of the horses. Take a short hike to get closer to these ancient wild animals for photo opportunities.
Continue driving to Elsen Taserkhai and the Bayangobi (meaning rich desert) area. Explore the 80km long sand dunes and beautiful surrounding area. Meet our friends, a camel herding family and mount up for your 1 hour camel ride across the sand dunes. In the evening make you dinner with your host family and learn how to make some traditional Mongolian food. Overnight in a ger next to a Nomadic family, shared gers.
Day 5 – Visit Kharkhorin, the ancient capital city of the Mongol Empire. Although the city no longer remains, it is the site of Mongolia’s largest working Monastery, Erdene Zuu. Spend time exploring the monastery and visit the museum to find out about the ancient city. Visit the Three Empires Monument to see the spectacular Orkhon valley. Drive back to your host family for the night. Tonight you may like to try some star gazing.
Day 6 – After breakfast continue to the Khogno Khan National Park and climb up to the monastery ruins hidden in the majestic Khugnu Khaan Mountains. Hike in the mountains through the unique juniper shrubs and search for wildlife such as steppe eagle and deer. Begin the drive back east to Ulaanbaatar, perhaps stopping on the way to visit a nomadic family for a cup of milk tea. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the late afternoon and transfer to your guesthouse. In the evening you may wish to see a highly recommended traditional song and dance show or visit the State Department Store for a spot of souvenir shopping. Overnight in guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar.
