Our 10 day Dog Sledding Expedition is a once in a lifetime unforgettable experience. Drive your own team of eager huskies in the heart of the Terelj National Park and Khan Khentii Protected Area where Chinggis Khan and his hordes used to roam. We invite you to explore Mongolia’s vast natural scenery and the ancient nomadic way of life. PROGRAM: Dog Sledding Expedition
Day 1 – Airport or train station pick up. Overnight in guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar. Upgrades available.
Day 2 – Drive to Terelj National park. Horse trek to meet your dogsled team and mushers to start your dog sledding expedition. The morning will allow you to get used to the sledge, on an easy path, till you are used to your team. You’ll learn the ropes, and by the end of the day you will feel like a pro. Sled till the evening, when we will stay overnight in a ger next to a local herder and his family. Experience the life of Mongolian Nomads and learn to make traditional meal such as Buuz (steamed dumplings).
Day 3 – A full day of dog sledding today, with a stop for lunch. You will speed along the Terelj River, passing through the valleys and forest. At the end of the afternoon, you will come to Bosiin Guur, where your host family has their winter home. Enjoy a warm cup of milky tea and a hearty Mongolian dinner. You can learn more about the nomadic way of life with your host family. Sharing this time together in the family ger is an unforgettable experience. You will discover a different world, a different culture combining ancient and modern habits in harmony, and a different notion of time. Overnight in a ger next to family.
Day 4-7 – In the morning help to harness the dogs and prepare to leave. On these days you will travel along the Tuul river. The next three days will see you sledding through wild and remote areas of the Protected Zone. Few herders or families live here, only wolves, foxes and other wild animals. We will push the dogs to their limit, starting early and finishing as the sun sets, to reach your host families who are spread out in the wilderness. On Day 6 you will reach Khar Lake, a beautiful frozen freshwater lake surrounded by forest and mountains.
Each night you will discover a different world, a different culture combining ancient and modern habits in harmony, and a different notion of time. These nomads have few visitors at this time of year and area eager to talk and share stories. Overnight in a ger next to family.
Day 8 – After breakfast, sled on the steppe and between the mountains towards to Tsonjin Boldog between Gorki-Terelj Park and Khan-Khentii National Park. The river narrows and divides itself into many small streams. We will stop for lunch with a campfire in the forest and arrive at your camp in the late afternoon. In the afternoon you can visit the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue located over looking the beautiful river valley where a local legend says Chinggis Khan fortuitously found a golden horse whip. Tonight you will stay in a ger camp, with western facilities. Enjoy a tasty fusion dinner before relaxing in the bar. Overnight in twin ger or room (single supplement available).
Day 9 – After a leisurely breakfast depart for Ulaanbaatar. Today you have the option to spend a half day at the local ski resort (ski rental payable locally) or have a city tour to soak up the cultural and historical sites. In the evening see a highly recommended traditional song and dance concert. Overnight in guesthouse, twin room (Single supplement and upgrades available).
Day 10 – Transfer for your international departure.
